I understand Wilbur Smith is old and uses other writers to finish out his stories but this is absolutely pathetic. I just read one of his recent books, Call of the Raven and that was clearly a Wilbur Smith book, from the highs to the lows to more lows and then highest highs it was a well written thrill ride. This model can work very well. Legacy of War had none of what makes his books so wonderful. The story was so boring, unsuspenseful and so poorly written it took me weeks to plow through. It's difficult to read more than a few pages at a time without feeling ripped off. I can't understand how this book has over a thousand 5 star reviews. No fan of Smith's books could possibly have paid $12.99 to read this and like it. No way. Wilbur had a talent for saying a lot with few words. This writer cranks out page after page without saying anything. Most characters from the past books make an appearance but other than name, they are nothing like themselves. One particularly painful scene, the governor's garden party had some of the most cringe dialog ever. Here's when Saffron meets a good looking man:"If Michelangelo had ever seen you, Saffron thought, he’d have told David to hop it, your services are no longer required." stupid, absolutely unSmith-like writing like that throughout whole book. He kept saying so much about nothing that several times he contradicts himself. One time Gerhard picks up Saffron's gun she's training with and instantly hits every target, bragging that he used to shoot bad guys using a plane but when MauMau attack he can't hit broad side of a barn until he has to make a tiny shot to save a hostage (of course he makes it) this is after he was shot dead by his brother but later turns out he was miraculously saved by a flask in his jacket pocket. Jeeez.... If the writing was better this would be a decent book, not a Smith book, (it lacks the interesting twists and turns his fans are used to) but it's just so bad, so difficult to read such useless words, this is an insult to anyone who has ever read a Wilbur Smith book. I want my money back. Absolutely do not believe the good reviews on here, I think Amazon should do more to protect its customers. Like so many prolific authors such as Wilbur Smith, the need to take on a co-author for whatever reason,produces rather marginal results. Such is the case of his latest novel, Legacy of War. Crafting a novel is no doubt a tedious undertaking especially for an author of Wilbur Smith's proclivity. Simply put, this novel was not a Wilbur Smith endeavor until the very end and only then did he put his signature efforts into the story line and the writing. Apologies to David Churchill, but you're far from sharing credits with one of my favorite authors.
