The beginning started a little slow in book one, but boy am I glad I stuck around. By the 20% mark, the action was intense and fierce and didn’t let up for a second until the very end. So give it a chance as the stage and characters are set, and I promise you won’t regret it.The lavish cruise ship as a setting for book one was unique in post-apocalyptic fiction, and I really enjoyed that. This series really delves into the how and why of the apocalypse, including the power players, which was intriguing. Many books skip over that part entirely.There was excellent character development in both the “good” and “bad” guys and twists and turns I didn’t expect. After book one, the series goes more in the typical apocalyptic direction one might expect, but books three through five took some wild turns I didn’t expect but loved.There were some absolutely terrific, spine-tingling scenes (no spoilers!) that had me freaked out and barely breathing. Let’s just say the Hydra virus affects animals differently than humans. That was a fun take and something unique that I enjoyed.While the characters were in their late teens and early twenties, and this is marketed both as YA and adult, I completely enjoyed it as a middle-aged adult. It’s NOT your typical angsty, sparkly vampire YA at all. This series is gritty and compelling and tackles some deep themes.The characters aren’t whiny, either. I love how the two female characters—Amelia and Willow—begin the series as more typical girls, or at least, girls who haven’t come into their own yet, but who develop over the series into serious badasses but with different strengths. The brothers Micah and Gabriel were also well-written.I’d rate this book PG-13 for some violence but nothing too gory. There’s no sex and no hardcore language, either. Still, the themes are pretty mature and I wouldn’t recommend it for a young teen. But older teens and adults will enjoy it. There’s also a companion novel, NO SAFE HAVEN, which was fantastic. It's great to see the whole saga available from start to finish in one sitting, No more waiting for the next novel to be published ! I raced through this series. Great characters, excellent world building, scarey plot. Hit's all the right spots, of family, friendship, danger, power crazed leaders making BIG mistakes. This collection has it all. Highly recommended this great YA Dystopian series.
